Grand Tour 2023

The Grand Tour is the heart of the eBike Nomads 2023 season. It’s a journey from south to north as the summer warms, then back south as fall approaches. It’s our version of modern migration, all for the joy of exploration.

The tour is designed as a single journey but is broken into two 3-week blocks, the first northbound, the second southbound along a different route. Guests are invited to join for multiple weeks, hopefully for full 3-week south-to-north or north-to-south blocks. But guests who cannot commit to multiple weeks are welcome to sign up for individual one-week segments.

Block One: Northbound – Verona to Prague (three one-week segments)

Our northbound adventure starts in Verona, on the northern edge of the Italian plains. Traveling north towards Austria, we’ll bisect the Dolomites, then turn east to follow the southern flank of the Austrian Alps. Often following EU Cycling Route 7, we’ll experience alpine meadows, modest terrain, and quiet paths. Then we turn north again, straight towards the heart of the alpine ridge. At a point where the Alps block almost all but mountain goats, we hop a train to tunnel through the highest pass, exiting still in Austria, but on the north-facing slopes amid ski slopes left and right. Each day following takes us away from the high Alps, presenting unique geography and spectacular scenery from high mountain villages to the historic, bustling city of Passau, Germany on the Danube River.

We follow the Danube for a day, then turn north towards the Czech Republic. Austrian highlands turn to Bohemian meadows and ancient towns as we make our way towards Prague, one of the most historic and architecturally significant cities in Europe. Three weeks following our start, we end the first half of our tour in the heart of city, 600 miles and centuries of history from where we started.

A note on Prague: We finish in Prague on purpose, partly because it is a not-to-be missed city, and partly because we want to provide guests an opportunity to spend as much time as possible exploring this amazing, historic place. Book extra days in Prague if you can; you’ll cherish every minute spent there.

Block Two: Southbound – Vienna to Treviso (three one-week segments)

We reconvene later in the summer in the cultural capital of Europe, Vienna, Austria. Like our finish in Prague at the end of block one, we start in Vienna to allow guests joining us here have an opportunity to arrive a few days early and explore on their own. Be it music halls or theater or just soaking in the historical significance of this amazing city, Vienna is a magical setting worthy of all platitudes.

Our southbound journey takes us first up the Danube River to Linz, where we linger a bit, then turn south back towards the Alps. The next few days find us in a magical wonderland of Austria’s high alpine meadows reminiscent of the Sound of Music. We pass ski lifts too numerous to count, cycle over two high mountain crossings, and drop into the other-worldly setting of Slovenia, home of Lake Bled, and so much more. Adjacent to Italy and Austria’s Tirol Alps range, Slovenia’s Julian Alps are a wonder to behold—and a special place not to be missed.

From Slovenia, we move to the Italian Dolomites, a place of grand, dramatic peaks and pathways that wend from valley to mountain to valley in an endless procession of awe. We’ll linger as we can and bump as many cirques as possible, but eventually we’ll turn south, back to the plains of northern Italy. Another 600 miles traveled, time spent in alpine settings usually reserved for hardy goats and James Bond movies, and our grand tour of 2023 comes to an end. For those lucky enough to have joined the adventure, there is little doubt that planning to join 2024’s grand tour will be the next step on their agenda—and eBike Nomads will be there to welcome them.

A note on Slovenia: Even more so than many of its western European neighbors, Slovenia is a step back in time; a place where bustling modernity is on the chase but hasn’t quite caught up. Unfathomable beauty will not keep Slovenia quiet for much longer, but at least for the time being, we get to experience a place noticed, but not quite changed from decades past. As guests, we’ll lend our respect and enjoy the gift we’ve been granted, taking care to leave the magic as pristine as we find it.
