Spectacular Tuscany. There’s a reason why Tuscany stands out as one of the most sought out travel destinations in Europe. Its breathtaking beauty is unparalleled, boasting rolling hills, never-ending vineyards and olive groves, captivating medieval hilltop villages, majestic castles, and a rich culture that has evolved over centuries. Bathed in an ethereal light that seems to emanate from within, this enchanting region provides the ideal backdrop to blend our cycling adventures with a lively photo workshop week.

Photography, cycling, and more. Each day will include photography workshops and bike trips. You’ll have the option to wake early for a morning photo shoot, or sleep in and lounge; join other guests on an afternoon ebike ride, or remain at the villa to learn new tips on photo processing; visit nearby villages, monasteries, and wineries, hike through endless olive groves, lay by the poolor do it all! There’s no “one size fits all” day on this trip.

    Photography Shoots and Workshops

A week of photography workshops. This trip blends two of our favorite passions: cycling and photography. Each day will offer both the option to work on your photography or to explore by bikeor to do both. Formal morning photo shoots amongst the vineyards and monasteries, plus late light shoots at dusk, will highlight photography’s greatest ally: magic light. Magic light is that soft glow that illuminates the world in a way that brings out colors that even the largest Crayola pack hasn’t considered. It’s the light that kisses our eyes and our camera sensors, leaving any semblance of harsh contrast behind.

As a professional photographer, Russell Graves has been studying light as it hits his eye and camera sensor his entire life. He’s learned not only camera techniques that help capture an image, but how to anticipate and prepare so that he is ready when those magical moments reveal themselves. And, lucky for us, Russell will be with us this week to teach us what he’s learned, to improve our ability to see both with and without a camera, to help us understand what being prepared entails, and to improve our ability to capture and process beautiful photos. And let’s face it, everyone who longs to go to beautiful places wants photographs that do the original justice.

To learn more about Russell Graves and see a gallery of his fabulous work, visit his website at www.HackberryFarmTexas.com or www.RussellGraves.com. Be sure to sign up for his newsletter and webinars and scroll through his catalogue of past instructive presentations.

    A Cycling Wonderland

Cycling Tuscany. As you move through Tuscany, you notice cyclists everywhere. There are paved roads that meander through forests and fields, offering vistas that are unparalleled anywhere. Pavement give way to gravel as we wend our way through olive groves and forested boundary lands. Olive groves turn to vineyards, with their perfectly spaced rows climbing hillsides and making serpentine patterns that catch the light, then let it go. Cycling Tuscany is anything but flat, but it’s far from a sufferfest dealt out by steep mountain passes to the north and east; cycling in Tuscany is pure bliss, with ear-to-ear smiles to prove it.

    Exploring Tuscany’s Treasures

Florence, Siena, Montelcino, Montefalco, Val d’Orcia and more. Florence is filled with word-class museums and galleries that showcase its place as birthplace of the Renaissance. We urge you to spend a few days before or after our trip in Florence, to visit the Uffizzi Gallery or Museo Galileo or Brancacci Chapel or the many other significant places that house great works of art and architecture. But because time is short, we won’t be spending much time there. Our journey will instead take us to the Tuscan countryside and a hundred hilltop villages that, in and of themselves, are works of art equal to any found in Florence.

From our home base, we’ll venture by ebike and van to hilltop villages in every direction. We’ll explore Siena and learn the importance of its Contradas. We’ll visit Pienza, home to Popes and dignitaries dating back centuries, and we’ll explore Montalcino and Montepulciano and Querico and World Heritage Sites including Val d’Orcia. Wineries, monasteries, castles, medieval villages, and so much more beckon us as we cycle, photograph, and explore from first light to last. And at the end of each day’s adventures, our villa will await, welcoming us to its hearth as it has for so many before us.

    A Very Private Villa

A villa of our own. We’ll stay in a fabulous villa in the Tuscan hills between Florence and Siena, in a magnificent manor house surrounded by vineyards and olive groves. Luxuriously furnished bedrooms with private baths provide personal space, while expansive indoor and outdoor common areas invite the group to assemble and share experiences. We’ll enjoy meals prepared in our gourmet kitchen, and we’ll lounge by our private pool or take walks through the gardens. Our home for this week will ground us and nourish us and bring us closer to the Tuscany that those lucky enough to live here treasure. For one lucky week in Tuscany, we’ll call this villa home.
