Far from the madding crowd in Central Italy. Umbria, with endless vineyards and medieval hilltop villages, lies between rugged mountains on the east and rolling hills that blend into neighboring Tuscany to the west. This region in Central Italy may not be as bustling as its more famous neighbor, but there is no shortage of beauty, historic hilltop villages, fabulous food, fortresses, basilicas, castles, and ancient olive groves here. To people in the know, Umbria is central Italy at its best—all the wonders of this ancient land, but with a bit more intimacy.
The perfect way to experience Umbria. We’ll explore hilltop villages, castles, vineyards, and endless olive groves seemingly painted onto the landscape. We’ll bike each day on narrow roads and gravel lanes where the only traffic is the occasional farm tractor. Our routes will take us through landscapes that will stop us in our tracks, then we’ll slow even more as evening light gently urges us through village lanes built for carts and oxen a thousand years ago. Our eBike Nomads adventure perfectly balances our love of cycling and our yearning to explore the endless wonders all around us. Exploring by bike in Umbria—now that’s the ultimate adventure.
Perugia, Italy
Two nights in Perugia. We gather in Perugia, the largest city and capital of Umbria, and spend our first two nights in the heart of the old center. We’ll spend our days riding bikes through the countryside, saving time in the afternoon and evenings to explore the labyrinth of ever-narrowing medieval lanes of the old city. We’ll tour the ancient fortress upon which the city is built, and savor authentic Umbrian cuisine. Our adventures will take us to a restored castle, endless vineyards and olive groves, and reveal to us an Umbria that tourists rarely see.
Assisi, Italy
Two nights in Assisi. We’ll ride from Perugia to Assisi through the Apennine foothills, traversing vineyards and olive groves both at our fingertips and as far as the eye can see. In Assisi, we’ll tour the Basilica of St. Frances, one of the most spectacular churches in Italy, climb the walls of Rocca Maggiore, the fortress that dominates the city from above, and cycle through the countryside alongside pilgrims walking the Via de Francesco.
Trevi, Italy
Two nights in Trevi. Central Italy is famous for its medieval hill towns, but none may be more intriguing and beautiful than the village of Trevi. A quiet place authentic to its past, it is laced with so many intimate passages that it’s easy to feel like you have the place to yourself. We’ll arrive by bike, feeling like we discovered something no one else knows about. And we’ll slow down and walk, and absorb, and wander this gem of a town that seems to have changed little over the thousand-plus years since it sprouted here from the rich Italian soil.
By the end of this glorious week, we’ll have learned many valuable lessons of Umbria, of the ancient towns that anchor it, the hills that feed and nurture it, and the people who built this place from its rich soil. We’ll have had the good fortune to be here for a short time, and we’ll treasure it as we treasure any great gift.
